Writer's Guild Empty
PostSubject: Writer's Guild   Writer's Guild EmptyWed Nov 06, 2013 12:54 am

I know a few people wanna write, so let's write.
I know a lot of people write very little for some reason despite wanting to write, so let's write little.

In this iteration of the "trying to get people to write stuff" series, the general rule is, you can't write too much. That is so that people who write little would be as willing to participate, so that it would be easier to get a piece out and so that we can learn how to exclude useless information from our works for a more dense writing form, which the upper limitation promotes.

You can only write up to one piece a week.
You have to write at least one piece a month.
A piece cannot exceed 10000 characters.
Pieces can be related to each other, so a work of writing from one week can have another chapter in the next week. As such, if your work exceeds 10000 characters, it is recommended to break it up and use it on the following weeks as well. That spreads to different authors, so with an agreement, two members can write two different chapters of the same story.
You can only post your own work.
You are allowed to post a work derivative of another fictional work (fanfiction).
Only sign and requirement of participation is posting a work in the designated topic at any time in the month, no sign-ups required.

First on the 10000 character limit. To give you an idea, PYYYOUR's The beginning of N: Chapter 1 http://www.worldduelingacademy.com/t6496-beginning-of-the-n-chapter-1 was 14271 characters long. You don't even have to do that much, in fact you are not allowed to go that far, that's well over 10000. To give you another example, Lesbi's very short School of Heroes http://www.worldduelingacademy.com/t6561-school-of-heros was at 6477 characters, which is actually also over the recommended limit. The recommended point here is the one given by the P19. achievement which is 4000 characters. Think the smaller Generation X chapters in terms of length. Speaking of achievements, works done within the writer's guild can be eligible for them.

On the other hand you may say, 10000 is actually too short of an upper limit. Infinitely breaking your work is not the only way to deal with that in this case, there is a recommended way to work with it. First cut down on unneeded information. Then you may also cut down on information you deem needed. You don't have to have an explanation, you don't have to have an introduction, you don't have to have a description, a lead or a follow-up and you certainly don't need character exposition or plenty of characters for that matter. You can keep it short even if not everyone can understand it, even something confusing is acceptable, it can still be considered good so long as it is not unpleasant.

The point of this is to motivate people who seek the motivation to write. At the wrap-up of each Writer's Guild month we check contributions and try to give impressions and tips to each other. Remember that most of us are not good writers, there is nothing wrong with that, helping people get better slowly by giving them small pointers in improving their current work is fine and recommended (that means no "-your story +six sams")

As a side note, this post is 3254 characters long, which would also be acceptable if it were a story.

It can be R16, so long as the writer too is of at least that age ofc and there is a relevant warning.
To clarify what my standards are when I refer to R16, basically, no describing sex. It can be implied or even mentioned, but of course not described, so what this all means is: no porn. Anything other than that is allowed so long as you use a proper warning tag. If there is foul language have a foul language warning, if there is extreme violence have an extreme violence warning, etc. If something on those fields gets out of hand in a way, well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

pw, this isn't about reposting stuff you have already posted, that would be pointless, it serves no purpose to do it. Additionally, if you happen to write more than 10000, you can break it in 2 and post the rest in the following week of the month. And of course, you can always edit it to fit the 10000 limit.

I think I'll join in too, I need something to make me write more.
Please, Al, slap me up if I'm behind.

P.S. As I'm a playwright, I'll be writing plays, and so I expect the repeated names on the left hand side to be excluded from the character count.

So, any suggestions on when to start this? You guys want to postpone a bit until you get more time, or do I start it now?

I'll start writing now regardless of what you say. I need something to do at work...I can't read, but I can do stuff on OneNote while I make calls all day.

I'll be posting the first topic on Monday. You can prepare whatever until then if you want to participate, or start then. Remember that while it is 10000 characters a week, you don't have to write them within that week, it simply means that is the time you post them, so you can prepare now. Again, if you have more than 10000, post the 10000 first and wait a week for the rest.
