Conditions, Continuous and Lingering Effects

Before I will start, I will mention my article on PSCT which you might need to understand PSCT since I will not elaborate PSCT again.

Straight into those effects we go.

Conditions - this type of effect isn't actually an effect, it's, as the name might suggest, a condition one must fulfil.
Generally, this type of effect cannot be negated due to the same reason above - they aren't effects.

Summoning Conditions are the conditions one must fulfil to summon a certain monster - such as Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Chaos Sorcerer or Dark Armed Dragon, to name a few.
In PSCT, new Summoning Conditions are implied using a "(from your hand)", a "Cannot be Summoned except by..." or a "and cannot be Summoned by other ways" clause.

Other mentionable conditions include cards such as Malefic Stardust Dragon (later on referred to as MSD), which has both a Summoning Condition and a "normal" Condition.
Looking at its card text, this is what we receive:
Malefic Stardust Dragon wrote:
Code:
Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 "Stardust Dragon" from your Extra Deck and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. There can only be 1 face-up "Malefic" monster on the field. Face-up Field Spell Cards cannot be destroyed by effects. Other monsters you control cannot declare an attack. If there is no face-up Field Spell Card on the field, destroy this card.

The first condition is included within these lines:

"Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 "Stardust Dragon" from your Extra Deck and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways."

This line tells us how we are able to Summon MSD, we can't skip these lines or try to defy this lines in any other way.

The next condition MSD includes:

"There can only be 1 face-up "Malefic" monster on the field."

This condition applies everywhere (besides from the deck, cards do not have effects in the deck).
We cannot summon another copy of MSD from our hand if we have a face-up Skill Drain on the field because MSD includes a condition (which cannot be negated) both on the field and in the hand.

Another example for a card with a Condition is Chaos Sorcerer (later on referred to as CS).

Let's have a look at its card text:
Chaos Sorcerer wrote:
Code:
Cannot be Normal Summoned or Set. Must first be Special Summoned (from your hand) by banishing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster from your Graveyard. Once per turn: You can target 1 face-up monster on the field: banish that target. This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this effect.

This card includes 2 conditions in its card text just like MSD.

First one is, you can guess, the Summoning Condition part.

The second one is this following clause:

"This card cannot attack during the turn you activate this effect."

Activating this effect causes Chaos Sorcerer to lay a condition on itself which cannot be negated and will still apply even if Chaos Sorcerer's effect is negated by a card like Effect Veiler or Skill Drain.
[Note: This does not apply to "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" in the Official KONAMI Video Games of 2011 even though their wording is the same for some reason.]

Looking back at MSD, reading the text again, you may notice the other 3 lines which are no conditions.

"Face-up Field Spell Cards cannot be destroyed by effects. Other monsters you control cannot declare an attack. If there is no face-up Field Spell Card on the field, destroy this card."

All of these 3 lines (or a separate line, depends on how you want to look at it) are continuous effects.
These CAN be negated by cards like Skill Drain, Effect Veiler, Fiendish Chain, Forbidden Chalice etc.

So, having that, MSD will NOT be destroyed by its own effect if Skill Drain was face-up on the field BEFORE it was summoned since continuous effects CANNOT be chained to.

Exactly like that, other monsters you control WILL be able to attack if Skill Drain is face-up (assuming it is not being negated by Trap Stun, which introduces us to another type of effects soon) while MSD is face-up on the field.

Yet, Field Spells WILL be able to be destroyed for the same reasons mentioned above.

Now, as I hinted above, Lingering Effects are a type of effect which (like all other types of effects mentioned here) do not start a chain.
They usually require to be activated once before, such as Trap Stun, Effect Veiler or Maxx "C".

These effects will continue to last either until the End Phase or until the target is no longer face-up on the field (only for cards such as Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, Blackwing Sirocco the Dawn and such).
Yet, there is a certain exception for cards that modify ATK/DEF and Skill Drain - lingering effects that modify ATK/DEF ONLY FOR THEMSELVES (such as Number 17: Leviathan Dragon) WILL be negated by Skill Drain, whereas lingering effects that could modify other monsters' ATK/DEF will NOT be negated by Skill Drain after properly resolving even if they modify their own ATK.

So much from me there, I'm done for today. Whew.
