Bio: Squirtle is River's first Pokemon. Squirtle evolved while training in the Viridian Forest, and was used to defeat Rocky in a squash match as a Wartortle. Wartortle was used in River's Gym test, which ended in a draw due to Misty's pregnancy. Wartortle evolved mid-battle against Blaze's Charizard.

Bio: Bought from a fisherman near Mt. Moon, River gave Magikarp a Rare Candy in order for it to evolve into the power Gyarados. Often as her opening Pokemon, Gyarados is a powerful Pokemon that is hard to take down.

History: River is one of five trainers that began their journey in Viridian City. River received a Squirtle against Professor Oak. River won the double battle against Flora and Blaze. After the battle, her Squirtle was attacked by Voltage's Pichu with Thundershock. River evolved her Squirtle into Wartortle after Flora evolved her Bulbasaur in the Viridian Forest, determined not to fall behind.
River defeated Rocky to earn her first badge: The Boulder Badge. She caught her second Pokemon, but kept it a secret from the others. While helping Bill keep his files safe, she was given a Vaporeon as a reward.
River fought Blaze for the right to be Gym Leader of Cerulean Gym. River started the battle with Vaporeon, but lost to Flareon. She also revealed her final member of the team, Gyarados, which knocked out Flareon and Growlithe before falling to Charmeleon. Their Gym battle was cut short, as Misty went into Labor.
During the Gym Battle, it was revealed that River got Gyarados from a salesman who was selling Magikarp outside of Pewter City. She gave it a Rare Candy to evolve it. River and Blaze's battle was canceled after Misty went into labor. The mysterious trainer, J, attacked them afterward.
Because River and Blaze's battle was canceled, there was no official winner. After giving birth to a baby boy, Misty declined River's position of becoming the new Cerulean Gym Leader based on J going after their files on the Legendary Pokemon.
While challenging Voltage for the Thunder Badge in Vermillion City, J interrupted the fight and attempted to steal the files once more. River managed to hold her own against the Legendary Beast Pokemon, Entei. After the battle, Lt. Surge gave River the Thunder Badge for her bravery and her Pokemon's strength.
While traveling to Celadon City, she and Flora ran into Blaze, who was training before going to Fuchsia City. River challenged him to a battle, which she won after her Wartortle evolved into a Blastoise. When they arrived at Celadon City, River and the others discovered that the Gym Leader, Erika, is ill. When Flora returned, she challenged River to a Gym Battle as substitute Gym Leader. The match ended in a draw. After the match, they were attacked once again by J. Flora was injured in battle. While Flora was injured, she went and got her Soul Badge and Marsh Badge.
